Mr. Abdoulie Janneh
UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa

Q Why did it take so long to

establish ECA ---when the

counterpart in Asia was

established in 1947?

The delay was mainly due to the

fact that most African countries

had not attained independence

at the time. When Ghana gained

 independence in 1957, it raised

the issue of an Economic Commission

for Africa and was supported by

twenty-eight other countries.

The resolution succeeded and

the general Assembly instructed

ECOSOC to establish ECA on

29 April 1958.
